DIG was recently honored for our commitment to inclusivity at the 3rd Indigenous Seeds Culture and Food Harvest Fair, held at the Nyando Community Seed Bank in Kisumu.
This annual event brought together organizations focused on indigenous seeds, food sovereignty, and sustainable agriculture. Among the key participants were Seed Savers Network Kenya, BIBA Kenya, PELUM Kenya, and various community seed banks—all united in their mission to strengthen local food systems.
Olivia Nyaidho, our Director of Global Mission and Executive Director of DIG Kenya, spoke about the impactful work we’re doing through initiatives like the Indigenous Foods Preservation Project. Our recognition at this event highlights our ongoing commitment to revitalizing indigenous crops, championing regenerative agriculture, and advancing food security in the communities we serve.
This recognition underscores the importance of DIG’s approach to food security, which goes beyond providing food. It’s about empowering communities to safeguard their agricultural heritage and strengthen local food systems. By revitalizing indigenous crops and promoting sustainable farming practices, we’re helping ensure that communities can access nutritious, culturally appropriate food—building resilience against climate change, economic challenges, and disruptions in local food systems.
At DIG, we believe that true food security goes beyond access to food—it involves empowering communities to define and control their own food systems. That’s why our initiatives focus on strengthening local seed banks, revitalizing traditional knowledge, and fostering regenerative methods that are in harmony with the environment. These efforts help reduce dependency on imported seeds and synthetic inputs, improve soil health, and increase biodiversity—paving the way for more self-sufficient, food sovereignty resilient communities.
Through our work to preserve and promote indigenous seeds, we’re contributing to a more sustainable food future—one where communities have control over their food systems and the ability to grow the crops that nourish them. This approach aligns with our broader mission to build food systems that are inclusive, equitable, and sustainable for future generations.
We’re proud to be recognized alongside organizations that share our vision for a food-secure world. Together, we’re strengthening local food systems and advancing a future where all communities have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive.
